How to design a logo

So you are looking to design a logo for your company. Our first suggestion is to hire or commission a graphic designer. Designing a logo may seem like a simple task, but ask any good designer and they will tell you it’s not. The design process rarely is.

What is a logo?

Logos are symbols made up of text and images that help us identify brands we like. A good logo is the cornerstone of your brand. It helps customers understand what you do, who you are and what you value. That’s a lot of responsibility on a tiny image!

What are the elements of a logo?

Typography
A logo will usually contain some kind of typographic element. This can range from a monogram-style single letter, to an abbreviation or the full title of the business. Typography is accompanied by symbols or icons.

Colour
Logos can be black and white, monochrome or multicoloured. Multicoloured logos often have palettes that are either analogous, meaning colours of similar hue, or complementary, meaning colours of distant or opposite hue.

Imagery
At times the typography can be accompanied by symbols or icons. These elements can be representative or composed of abstract geometric elements.

What makes a good logo?
• Simple
• Memorable
• Unique
• Versatile
• Appropriate for the industry
• Relevant to your target market

Feedback and Review

Take a step back from your work, look at it later or even the next day. If you have come up with several logo designs, focus on the stronger ones and discard the weaker ones. Take the time to get feedback from colleagues and other designers.
